Sherm’s Tips on Helping Senior Citizens

Buy Now! NEW! IMPROVED! This tutorial is much more than a revised version of the original. It is over three times longer and includes information from many of the columns on helping seniors to become computer literate.

What is a senior? What is computer literacy?

What makes seniors different from other people such that they require a special tutorial? Attempting to isolate any group from the total of humanity and assigning characteristics to that group is risky at best. The book is clear right from the start: there is no such thing as a well-defined set of computer-illiterate seniors. The author happens to know people who are mature and who are not comfortable using computers. Some of these do not even appreciate that they have the intelligence to use a computer as more than a conduit for e-mail and writing letters.

Many self-defined seniors believe they should know more about this powerful tool. And some seniors are willing to actually learn what it takes, but many hurdles face the older person trying to come up to speed. They have good life experience, but have been out of the habit of studying for years. The situation is worse when they see young people, who have grown up in a post Apple ][ era, blitzing a keyboard and using language that is largely unintelligible to non-native geeks.

This belief and theme that underlies both the columns and this expanded tutorial for seniors. The best of his popular column, "Sherm's Senior Service" has been collected and organized along with much original material into an improved tutorial to aid anyone who wants to help senior citizens claim their part of cyberspace.

I have my cable modem’s ethernet hooked into a netgear wgt624 v3 wireless router with ethernet cable back to desktop computer. My problem is getting my laptop Toshiba satellite a105-s4064 with 802.11a/b/g wireless to connect with the netgear router. It recognizes netgear but says a cable is not connected to router (my fault, earlier I tried and wanted to update software and it only worked for me by switching ethernet cable from desktop to laptop). Both computers are XP, laptop is media and desktop xp home. I know how to switch on and off on laptop wireless connection. Can you help someone that knows enough about network to get in trouble. Thanks Mike Eth in KC. MO
