I just bought a USB Missile Launcher from ThinkGeek. Think of it as a combination of poor construction and poor software. So, in my typically over-simplified manner, here’s my one-minute overview review:
Pros:
1. Shoots missiles
2. Laser guidance
3. USB connection provides computer control
4. Battery power provides use on laptops - Though you may as well use a rubber band.
5. Earned me 525 useless “Geek Points”.
Cons:
1. Range is about three feet.
2. Laser guidance is useless given its range. You will only get a general idea of the direction it’s pointing, which you could get by looking at the launcher itself. Additionally, what they call “laser guidance” is really just a $5 red laser pointer. The styrofoam darts could never follow it.
3. Software is overly showy. Could have been done with a simple web interface. Just give me five buttons.
4. There is a delay of a few seconds between hitting LAUNCH and the actual launch.
5. Base doesn’t pitch to a steep enough angle to get over a cubicle wall given the poor range. For cubicle warfare, your enemy would have to share a cubicle with you or you’d need to put it on top of something.
6. Requires three AA batteries. Come on, people - Either provide an AC adapter or get your power over the USB cable. Stationery desk objects, let alone computer accessories, shouldn’t run on batteries.
Summary:
I’d love to use an old adage like “You get what you pay for”, but this is not the case. I paid for a $30 missile launcher and I got a rubber band on steroids. I rate it a 30% and -50 arbitrary “Cool Points”.
