Review of the Palmsize Havok Helicopter from ThinkGeek

  • No Related Post

Among the toys I bought recently from ThinkGeek was a Palmsize Havoc Helicopter - Channel C (Blue). I don’t know why they put all that in the product name (at least on my order form), so I’ll just call it the “Palmsize Havoc Helicopter”. Here is my 61-second overview of a review:

Pros:
1. The helicopter half runs on a rechargable battery
2. Lightweight
3. Cheap for an R/C Helicopter ($30)
4. Helicopter came partially charged
5. Tiny
6. Quick and maneuverable, once you figure it out
7. Constructed of durable foam
8. Flies for several minutes
9. Charges in 15 minutes
10. Earned me 200 useless “Geek Points”.

Cons:
1. These people have some funny ideas on how to make a rechargable product. The helicopter plugs in to the remote control and charges off that.
2. The remote control requires an unheard-of six AA batteries. For that, I expect an AC adapter and a built-in AA charger (Though it isn’t one).
3. The power switch on the helicopter is small and difficult to get to and change the setting on.
4. Made out of cheapo styrofoam. I gave it a “Pro” on the construction because it easily withstands most airborne impacts, but I could easily crush the whole thing with my hand. I expected at least some form of cheapo plastic.
5. Impossible to get it to hover in a stationary position. Has a tendency to zoom around of its own free will like the SuperBall from MiB. Difficult to control in an enclosed environment; but you need an enclosed environment because it only operates under zero wind conditions. I had to turn off my fan.
6. The remote control is constructed much more sturdily than the helicopter itself.

Summary:
I’m gonna shell out for a real one next time; I’m afraid this thing’s gonna snap the Christmas Tree’s retaining wires and set the house on fire or something. I have no way of knowing what it’s going to do, though I can get it to calm down for brief moments. Sometimes it just starts rotating wildly as if its blades were stationery and the fuselage was supposed to rotate. Though it was fun and the cat was going nuts. I give it a charitable 80% (Based largely on the bang-for-your-buck maths) and 100 “Cool Points”.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go place it back into its crush-proof container.
