Children’s birthday parties: What do you do when you’re invited to many on the same day?

Today has been one very busy day.  We were invited to two large birthday parties for our friends’ children.  Both of these families we consider close friends and want to be a part of the lives of their children.  But what do you do when they both schedule parties on the same day? We were lucky this time, as the parties were scheduled staggered so we actually could attend both.  But after running all over town for both parties I got to thinking what would be the “proper” way to handle such a scheduling hiccup? Is there a proper etiquette to declining to attend a party of a friend’s child?  What are the dos and do nots?
