I'm totally with Rick. The 2 Vista machines I have used have NEVER put me though a forced reboot, but I understand how an administrator could find that feature useful.

The problem is blogs like this one, that while many times not having credible information themselves, treat mainstream media outlets as Gods, incapable of doing wrong. It's very likely this tech editor had no idea of the other possibilities at play here, otherwise he would have made not of them in his story. At least, any good journalist would have.

What the hell are you smoking? Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols is a troll, who thinks his desk job at NASA makes him some kind of computer guru. He bashes Microsoft at every possible moment while treating Linux and open source as if it was coded by Jesus himself. I can't imagine why you would praise of a man that is the Fox News equivalent of Bill O'riley. He's not a journalist or a great source of wisdom, just a one sided bigot.

Wouldn't it be nice if the following were true. 1. This release of windows will never need to be updated because there are no security flaws.
2. if any updates were required, the OS would be able to "switch the files and settings" while still running and maybe have a brief pause during that time....hmmmm....maybe put up an hourglass on the screen for that brief moment.????

DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT GETTING A BD PLAYER FROM PHILIPS!!! Customer service - what a joke. Mine is out of warranty and they will gladly send me a replacment for $345 within 7-10 days of receiving my "bad" unit. I have freeze frame problems. Upgraded firmware, no help. Cleaned it, no help. The killer is that it doesn't consistently freeze in the same places. It took 6 or 7 tries to get Premonition to play all the way through. Looks like I will be getting a PS3 to be on the safer side.

I am not very computer savvy. I am learning all the time. I learned one thing a long time ago. Beware of Microsoft products that have not been in use for very long. When I downloaded Service Pack 3, I saw that Microsoft suggested a system back-up prior to installation, and that was enough of a red flag for me. Later, I took a look at the EULA (which I normally do not examine closely) and I don't really see the point of having it. Maybe it's just me, but then I googled the update plus the word "explain", and found this site. Just as I suspected, there are problems with the update, and at the same time, I don't see much benefit to having it anyway. The bottom line is this: Thanks for you tech-savvy types for keeping an eye on things for the rest of us.
Note: Even the most ill-informed of us are beginning to realize that it is unwise to just swallow something offered by Microsoft if you've got everything working well already!

I think there are no reason to care about end of the world. The maximum what can happen its complite annihilation of France and Switzerland and global Ice Age after it!

For security reason I suggest to the civilians in the location of this machine to leave this place at time of experiment, and the people who do this experiments to warn those people before machine start to go on full power - for them to pray!

And this will never happen, because its stupid as a fact... Live such long time by creating such long history of human race and to reach the final step its destroying of all(except of correcting), for Nova World!??? I think God have a lot of places in his\she's hands to create New Worlds, or you think we dont like them because a lot of p0rn in internet!? OK... For example, the God is hate the p0rno, but why he is create them?

K.O. Have Nice Day, France and Switzerland! ;-)

Thats very true, we are very clear with are customers the limits that satellite internet poses, and we tell them that we will choke their internet if they use too much bandwidth. It's also interesting that out of all the customers we have, only a very small percentage of them use up a lot of bandwidth. its always the same trouble makers ;)

All I know is that I don't ride my dirt bike anymore because Tom Cruise won't be there to help my if I crash. As he is the only one that can help.

This is a bunch of whackos, little tommy gets some award and he salutes the "churches" supreme being when he comes up on stage. Sheep robots.

Dear Tom,

I'm just kidding so please don't put a rattlesnake in my mailbox.

Just a note, the brain is not fully developed until about age 26. Aside from that point, why not let the younger voters (who will be of age later) register? Seems fine to me.

On the liberal/conservative front, there will always be conflict between those that think the government is there to provide them a benefit and those that must pay for that benefit. The government's constant interference is a direct result of any government benefit.

Recent years have destroyed the Republican party because they lost their principles. Sure, taxes got reduced, but spending continued unabated. I suppose they thought that the Democrats had been doing it for years and folk liked that, so they decided to do it as well. The notions of limited government got abandoned.

The Democrats may achieve control of Congress this year, good for them. They had control for most of the past years prior to the Republicans 'awakening' and we seemed to manage OK. It's best to have a Republican as President just as a control on spending. We can only hope.

Sure, the young are likely to be liberal. After all they don't generally make enough money to worry about taxes and the benefits do sound good - something for nothing is the American way. Later they may discover somebody actually pays for benefits.

Life does go on and those of us who can find ways to avoid the government. I actually believe the voices that say 'Vote Incumbents Out'. It delays their ability to steal from the people.

Quite agree!
Or at least put the title in there somewhere.

AdobeReader9Setup.exe or similar would be so much more helpful.

Oh, and offer a zipped or otherwise compressed version for download too please! Not everyone can download .exe files.

Of course this is yet another chintzy move by Verizon to cut costs by cutting service. They are one of the sleaziest companies I know of. They still have yet to refund my deposit for cell phone service - more than a year after I cancelled their service. Calling customer service is an exercise in frustration and futility, since they outsourced their C/S to India, and you're speaking to somebody whose first language isn't English. The last time I called to make a ONE TIME payment (and repeatedly told them it was a ONE TIME PAYMENT), they are still billing that card, and sometimes double-billing. Thankfully, the county I live in is installing a county-wide wireless system, which is supposed to be in place soon. There will be several resellers selling the access, which should make for some competitive pricing and services. As soon as I can, I am giving Verizon the big heave-ho!

Get a Free Audio Book

Are you tired of reading books? Me too. Over the years, I developed pulpuslaceratapohobia - and the only known cure for that is Audible. Finally, a way to digest words without actually having to read them. Professional voices are wonderful choices if you love literary works in audio format. Are you ready to read some audio books? Maybe you should just listen to them instead.

VMware and Parallels for Virtual Machines

It doesn't matter if you're running on Windows or Mac OS X - every power user needs either Parallels or VMware (or both). There's never been an easier way to test software without destroying your primary operating system's stability. Think of how many times you wish you could press a 'reverse' button on your computer. Plus, there's no easier way to try new Linux distributions - see what all the fuss is about. Run Windows in OS X, run Linux in Windows, but the best way to do either is with VMware and/or Parallels.
