You Can Lead Stupid People to Water, But If They’ve Already Had Kool-Aid…

Sorry for the mixed, mangled metaphor, but it really does apply as is. A message from the AP today tells us that those prolifically fecund Arkansans, the Duggars, have seen fit to make the population explosion worse again, by having another child. Yes, the wife is pregnant once again. She found out, we’re told, because of some strangeness due to fussiness of the previous newborn while nursing.

Not that we shouldn’t celebrate life, but these people have gotten drunk on the high of having children more than once too often. Apparently, these people are not readers, watchers, or partakers of anything that would allow them to increase their knowledge in their spare time. (and yes, the joke about having no spare time certainly applies)

The really bad thing is that these people are not Mormon, or Catholic. That’s going to have many putting out extra effort to catch up, and grab that modern day record. Simply having the power to have children does not mean that the power should be exercised. That decision is what intelligence is for. These are exactly the type of people that say it is in God’s hands, but if that logic followed, we’d all have the intelligence of 5 year old children, as no more would be needed. God gave us intelligence to use, not to let be unused, like a fallow field.

How many children do people need? My feeling is two or less, as we are straining the resources of the planet, and though we would like to have people change their lives, and become consumers of less, for many it simply won’t happen. Too many people have a sense of entitlement, and nothing stated on television, found in print, or broadcast on terrestrial or satellite radio is going to change that. I don’t know about you, but I don’t wish a Blade Runner look to the world, to be what my progeny inherits.

The only real answer is less people, or else we will face the scenario of many good, and not-so-good, science fiction novels. Soylent Green, anyone?

[Many will say that the problem is a worldwide one, with no local solution, but then we must be good examples, and refer back to "Think Globally, Act Locally"]

Some things to ponder… Zero Population Growth, Planned Parenthood, Friends of the Planet, Overpopulation, Blade Runner, Planet in Peril
