While Western Digital has released a 2 terabyte hard drive previously, the drive is one of the Green Series, with the platters rotating at 5400 RPM, so it is like a step into the past, in terms of speed. Hitachi has now come up with their 2 terabyte offering, which moves at 7200 RPM. which means fast, but also means heat. The drive has 5 platters as well which means things are pretty tight on the inside of the drive.

Leave aside the SSD hype for a minute as Hitachi Global Storage has finally unveiled its first 2TB hard drive, the Deskstar 7K2000. The new 3.5-inch HDD, which is able to brag with being the first 2TB drive working at 7200 RPM (rotations per minute), has a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, 32MB of buffer memory, five platters, and uses the Hitachi Voltage Efficiency Regulator (HiVERT), to deliver “best-of-breed power consumption.”“The new Deskstar 7K2000 reflects our ongoing commitment to provide customers, channel partners and OEMs with proven, reliable solutions for enabling desktop computers, gaming systems, workstations and desktop RAID arrays,” said Brendan Collins, vice president of marketing, Hitachi GST. “At Hitachi, we continue to offer one of the broadest product lines in the world with a focus on delivering industry-leading hard drives that meet the reliability, performance, capacity and power needs of a variety of traditional and emerging market segments.”
In addition to the 7K2000, Hitachi has announced the Deskstar 7K1000.C series of drivers which go from 160GB to 1TB, also work at 7200 RPM, have platters with a capacity of up to 500GB, and feature SATA 3.0 Gbps connectivity.
Hitachi is saying that the Deskstar 7K2000 is already shipping so be sure to check out stores for it. We’ll just go mail Western Digital about shipping a 2TB Caviar Black.
Though I’m a long time fan of Hitachi drives ( I still have a working 1.7 GB model from 1996!) I do wonder why Hitachi did not put out a 4 platter drive, it certainly would have cut down on some potential problems.
Still, if Hitachi feels comfortable backing it with a 3 year warranty, it should mean that they feel that heat related problems should not appear in any of these drives.
