AGP – Still Not Dead!

That’s what graphics card maker HIS wants you to know. There are many machines still running that use an AGP port, which, if outfitted with a graphics solution that is supported with drivers, will run Windows 7 well, and Vista passably.
It must be remembered that there are lots of Pentium 4 motherboards with processors that do hyperthreading, and have very fast bus speeds, but also have an AGP port. Also, many Athlon XP motherboards are out there, supporting copious amounts of memory, and have Barton processors that run Microsoft’s last 2 OS efforts well, if given the chance. Also, it should be noted that many Linux goodies, such as Beryl and Compiz (now merged, I hear) will run with a lot of snap, if the graphics processor has the power.
Take something old (the AGP interface), something relatively new (the Radeon HD 4670), and something blue (a blue PCB ) and what do you have? Yes, that’s right, you have HIS’ Radeon HD 4670 IceQ, the AGP edition. Seen below, the new card features 320 Stream Processors, a 128-bit memory interface, a dual-slot IceQ cooler, a MOLEX plug for extra power, and D-Sub, DVI, and HDMI outputs.
The Radeon HD 4670 has its GPU clocked at 750 MHz, the 1GB of onboard memory at 1746 MHz, and can be found listed with a price tag of $129.99 ($119.99 after a rebate).
The 4670 is not considered a big heat producer, compared to its larger brethren, but it’s nice to know that the Arctic Cooling fan will keep things cooler than would be without that 2nd slot solution.
Since I own 3 Asus A7N8X-E – Deluxe systems, and they have nVidia GeForce 5 series solutions, I’ll be taking a hard look at these. I’m sure that lots of other people, not wanting to dump a cherished system, will do the same.
