McCain on MTP, "Straight Talk Is So… Last Year"

Well, perhaps he did not state it specifically, but he certainly did one of the worst tap dance routines I’ve ever seen.

When David Gregory asked him about the reasons that Sarah Palin gave for resigning as governor of Alaska, all he could do was stutter about her service being greater as a private citizen. This followed an admission that he had spoken with her, at length, and had only been surprised that she did not speak to him before her press conference. Was he not listening to her, or was her phone conversation also too hard to follow?

yes, that bus has left the station, and is currently lost in transit (also in translation)

Yes, perhaps he could have given her some tips about not rambling, but then, it seems McCain has learned more from her, becoming a very proficient rambler in this morning’s Meet the Press appearance.

from Huffington Post recap

“You have sustained personal torture, personal attack, political attack, investigation,” Gregory said. “You have never resigned from anything. Is it consistent with your qualities of leadership to resign an elected post like this?”

“Sure,” the senator said.

“It is?”

McCain said it was a question of how Palin could serve most effectively, and that she had decided she would be most effective if she stepped down. “I respect that position and that decision,” he said, “and I cannot tell you the appreciation I have for her.”

‽‽‽ (that interchange of ideas was at least a 3 interrobang moment)

When asked about the confirmation hearings coming up, for nominee Sonia Sotomayor, he stated that he could not give an opinion yet, as he was not fully aware of the facts.

What the heck has he been doing lately? Did he not know he might be asked? No doubt, the Republicans have all the talking points lined up, and the only thing McCain is waiting for is the possibility that a concerted effort to block the judge’s admission to the Supreme Court might happen. He certainly does not want to be the lone voice, taking a stand that is one of conscience and reason.

Oh, no, that would be too direct, too honest, too…straight.

Straight talk was just a slogan, not something to actually be followed.

I used to believe that McCain was a person that I simply did not agree with, and that is why I never voted for him. It is clear now that the image of being straight and above board was all part of a carefully engineered persona, and not an accurate depiction of the man.
