Apparently the Idea Is Not Mine Alone
Other places are making those lists of must have utilities, for when the too-late-for-spring cleaning occurs. I was perusing some other web sites while i was doing a few things online, and found at least two other places that had their own lists of utilities. Trouble is, those lists were duplicating much of the effort on Freeware Genius, mentioned earlier.
I did find a nice list over at Maximum PC, however. Only five on the list, but no dupes of the others and a couple I’ve never used, or heard of, for that matter. as much as I look for this stuff, that is truly amazing.
Rich Copy is one, which, though is not my favorite, works well – and many others favor it over TeraCopy.
ADRC Data Recovery Tools is one collection I haven’t heard of before, but I’m giving them a try.
Space Sniffer is one of those apps that is like some others, but appears enough different to check for possible superiority. It’s always nice to know how space on the hard drive disappears so quickly.
ReNamer, an application which will come in handy for photographers and other picture enthusiasts. It looks simple, and that is always nice.
SIW is another application that is very helpful, like Belarc Advisor, but a bit nicer, and it has always bothered me that Belarc insists on printing out, rather than having a multipage onscreen display.
Just a couple of things I use, that are, to my way of thinking, indispensible.
Secunia Personal Software Inspector, is something that will keep you from allowing your old, less than unbreakable applications from getting you in trouble, by letting you know when they need to be upgraded.
Also, though some think that the Windows Explorer is a file manager worth using, many don’t, which is why there are so many possible replacements. My favorite is xplorer², which is a two-pane manager, similar to the Norton Commander, if you remember that. It is amazing when you look at all the free, non-nagging version does, and more so when you buy it, to get the full power of it. Only Directory Opus is better, but it costs 3 times as much. Try the free version, it may be all you need.
Also, if you are looking for a lightweight editor, but with a few word processing abilities, you might want to try PolyEdit Lite, a free rich text editor. It is just the perfect balance of features to bulk. Give it a try! It also has a paid version, but the free one does not nag in any way,.
