More Is Always Better!

There is a saying in the automotive world, “If more is better, too much is just right!” In the world of computing there is no analog, (no pun intended) because there is usually no such thing as too much.
So it is with hard drive space, no matter how much one has, more is needed. There is a loosely gathered axiom that no matter the amount of free space, data swells to fill it up. Now there is at least temporary hope for those filled hard drives. Western Digital has shown a 2 terabyte monster, with 7200 RPM speeds, and a 64 MB cache. Dubbed the Caviar Black, it no doubt will be the ne plus ultra of capacious storage, for a while.
I’m not sure if this is the first drive to have a 64 MB buffer, but it certainly is the first non-SCSI drive to have that much buffer. With the adaptive cache technology that Western Digital is known for, the amount of cache always feels like more than the same amount on its competitor’s drives.
from Tech Connect
Already out with two 2TB hard drives - the Caviar Green WD20EADS, and RE4-GP WD2002FYPS, Western Digital is gearing up to introduce another model with that amount of capacity, one part of the high-performance desktop line-up known as Caviar Black. Hyped up a bit in Japan, the upcoming 2TB drive will be based on the WD2002FYPS and feature a working speed of 7200 RPM, 64MB of buffer memory, double that of the 1TB Caviar Black, two processors for top notch performance, a SATA 3.0 Gbps interface, and probably even some energy-saving technologies so make it cut down on power usage.
The 2TB Caviar Black will likely arrive in the next few weeks and cost in excess of $300.
Three hundred dollars may seem like a lot for a drive today, but it pales in comparison to what has previously been paid for leading edge tech purchases. When I bought the first 200 MB drive from Western Digital, it was my first hard drive purchase, and was an absolute bargain at $500. That was a long time ago.
Certainly Hitachi and Seagate will have answers to this, and the $300 cost will drop somewhat, but those who buy early won’t be disappointed with their purchase of a W-D product.
