Blind Search – Bringing the Truth?

A new site, hosted by the “delicategenius” blog, is providing a front end for searches, sent to the three top search (or decision) engines, and allowing a quick and easy perusal of the results.

Though there appears to be no way that the site is doing anything to change the results, the author states clearly he is a Microsoft employee.

I did five searches, randomly picked by things that popped into my head. I started searching for a person, Dorothy Stratten, and just by coincidence, ended with a person, Zoroaster. From each trial, the user picks the list of results that seem best, and has, if he/she wishes, to visit the hits to confirm the relevance.

For me, I got some surprising results, (not that Microsoft would be pleased) as 3 of the five times I picked Yahoo, with one to Bing, and one to Google.

UPDATE: I decided that 5 searches was not enough to decide, though it might be all it takes to convince many. The second time, 20 searches, 13 to Yahoo, 7 to Google, 0 to Microsoft (bada-bing!). I used more than people as beginnings for the search, and I was again surprised by the Yahoo results – I now wonder how long this has been true (for the type of searching I do).

So perhaps there is a reason to check these things every so often, but again, too bad Microsoft, but thanks for the trying. Truth is sometimes relative, and your searches are not mine, so YMMV, but I know I’ll be checking Yahoo more often.
