Prediction and Proof: Opera Does Change the Web!

Though I’m not sure that re-inventing the web was accurate, certainly Opera Unite does change the very way in which many will do things. I immediately think of my son, and his interactions with his friends. Where one can download a torrent of a map for a first person shooter, which, when first released, is excruciatingly slow, another can be downloading the latest video drivers, or some other map; then after getting those things accomplished, quickly share over local speedy connections with friends who then play the game over someone’s server. All the while, they can be chatting away, never leaving the boundaries of Opera.

Introducing Opera Unite

Opera Unite is a unique technology that turns any computer or device running Opera into a Web server. In other words, your computer (running Opera Unite) is truly part of the fabric of the Web, rather than just interacting with it, and it’s something anyone can use. With Opera Unite, everyday non-technical users can serve and share content and services directly from their own computers in the form of intuitive applications. That sounds kind of cool from a technology point of view, but what can you do with it, and why is it important?

With Opera Unite, we are giving developers a chance to develop applications (known as Opera Unite services) that directly link people’s personal computers together, so that you can connect with one or more of your friends at the same time. It all happens through the browser, so no additional software has to be downloaded, and it will work wherever Opera works (Windows, Mac, Linux, and later mobile phones and other devices). Opera provides the platform and you provide the applications—what you create is limited only by your imagination. We believe Opera Unite will redefine what’s possible with Web applications, and we invite you to join us in moving beyond stale ideas and limitations.

Certainly  this will affect those who wish to change the way they work into something more homogenous and ultimately useful. The ability to establish a desktop in the cloud, as I have seen many describe, certainly seems to be getting its start here.

The possibilities are amazing, and limited only by what is developed for the platform, but its ability to be hardware neutral, as browsers are, will mean more actual work and less fretting about how it gets done.

I have just gotten it, and will be using it along side of Opera 9.64 and Internet Exploder 8 for comparisons, For other comparisons, I’ll compare with the application that is closest to the operation done.

All I can say is – I’m going to need a bigger desktop.

Hi Marc,
I’ll be using it as well. Interesting concept.

Ron, careful, you’ll get hooked! A minor note - I really don’t like the standard color scheme, but the availability of many on line, and the ease with which they are changed is really nice. Check Dragon Blues if you like darker themes.

For the standard features, I really like the spellcheck feature, as my typing is not the best. (the mind is strong, but the fingers are weak)

Have fun.
