NCIS & Surface Computing

It’s amazing how many people like the same things, yet you might otherwise not know it. I was reading an article by Paul Murphy, from ZDNet, and see that he thinks that NCIS is a great program. I do also, but I have never analyzed why. I like Mark Harmon, but I don’t really identify with him; I don’t really identify with any of these people, yet the characters portrayed I admit, would be great ‘buddies’ to spend some time with.
the first team from the beginning
Mr. Murphy talks about the last 2 episodes of NCIS, where a spin-off is being tested, which will be set in Los Angeles. During the two episodes, which I thought were written around showing off characters, and not really around a cohesive story, we also were treated to the useful application of Microsoft’s Surface computing. I must admit, it was spacey and cool – kind of like the graphics thrill I used to get watching Babylon 5.
But I wonder, did the systems used work as well as we were shown? I am not always bashing Microsoft, but it is new technology, and, the actors certainly must have had to be instructed in how to gesture, to get things to move correctly. Think about it – the first time you used a mouse, it was easy, but not seamless.
The things shown were a great display of the stuff that Bill Gates used to talk about, and we were all supposed to go “Gee Whiz!”, but somehow, the only semi-affable Mr. Gates was only partially able to confer his sense of wonder to us. This couple of episodes, in typical television fashion, has been able to show us why Surface computing matters, and how incredibly cool it will be when this technology is brought down in cost for home use (yes, you know it will be!).
I have my doubts about the show, the spin-off, that is, as I am not sure how well LLCoolJ and the rest will translate as NCIS agents; none of these people really reach out and grab me, that way that Mark Harmon did, or David McCallum, Pauley Perrette, or any of the rest. But we’ll see.
One thing is for sure – the NCIS office in D.C. will certainly be getting some of these toys, as they are not to be outdone by a ‘branch office’ in Los Angeles.

I never really thought about that until now. But yeah, you do bring out a good point with the whole Microsoft Surface thing and how the government will get it first, whether it be to test out it, or to have to have it for real. I don’t know how they will use it to their advantage, but we don’t even know that much about Microsoft Surface. I mean…what is it? Does it have an OS for example? That’s pretty important after all.
