For those who say that the model that Google uses, with the intent to do no harm, bring value to the customer, and be more useful than other companies, is bound to fail, Robin Harris, an infrequent writer at ZDNet takes a look, and puts the number down, in a way that forces the reader to realize that the Microsoft model will eventually be hopeless.
Especially in this economy, the total cost of ownership is something that all businesses focus upon. The bottom line of any company is better, when the money going out is less.
The debate
Cloud, as in Google apps, and sand, as in locally hosted Microsoft apps, are battling for business mind share. “Cloud is cheaper” say proponents. “Traditional apps are more reliable” say skeptics.
After that, which, for many is no big news, he goes on to analyze the costs, of either solution.
In the end, he shows that a cost differential is worth a small inconvenience, if something should happen to your data, or connection, temporarily. Especially when that differential is 20 to 1.
