Finally, A Little Truth

I’ve always moved through this life wondering why some of the things in life are so difficult to discern, and why no one helps out with a little truth. Perhaps that was the source of the John Lennon song, ‘Gimme Some Truth’.

Well, in matters of the digital transition for television, we are, at least in my area, getting some truth! It truly is startling and refreshing.

I am watching the Today Show, on NBC, something I usually never do, and so it might have been predestined. (!)

During one of the station breaks, finally a note about the DTV transition. It seems that the powers that be have decided to allow us to know that come June 12, there are portions of the viewing audience that, due to terrain conditions, and the lack of signal strength (thank you, FCC!), will not be able to see that channel (4.1 – the NBC affiliate’s primary channel) through the use of an antenna.

While this is certainly unnerving for some, and more than a bit ridiculous, should I be asked, at least the warning is being given. Since it appears that no accommodation, such as repeater stations, mentioned in FCC literature, will be forthcoming, it gives those affected a chance to obtain satellite, cable, or say their final goodbyes to that station.

Since, in the Los Angeles area, all the major television stations have their transmitters on the same mountain, I’m certain that these type of public service notices will be sprinkled throughout the spectrum in the next few weeks.

At least the complaints, at the local FCC office, will be evenly spread over the next 60 days.
