The Case of the Exploding Computer
Does this sound like a story from CSI:Fargo or Law & Order Discontent?
It actually happened, and is noted on Neowin -
Software engineer found dead in front of burnt computer
We have heard of exploding batteries and burning laptops but this may be the first potential laptop explosion that killed a person. A software engineer working for Tata Consulting Services was found dead in the sitting position with a burnt computer in front of him.
“Police said his charred body was found in a sitting posture. ‘We are yet to ascertain the cause of the blast. The computer was completely damaged and the deceased was charred,’ a police officer told TOI.”
The victim had two roommates one of which “‘had gone to take bath. He told us that suddenly he heard a blast and when he rushed out he saw the charred body of his friend and fainted,’ the officer said. However, the case has baffled the investigating officers”.
The police have not officially ruled the death due to the explosion yet but all of the evidence at the crime scene does suggest that is was the explosion that killed the victim.
Should we call in Hercule Poirot? Miss Marple? Sherlock Holmes? If it was not so sad it might even be funny, like an episode of Tales from the Crypt.
Better be careful with your computer, and check for foreign objects the next time you sit down.

“I got a letter from the IRS. Apparently I owe them $800. So I sent them a letter back. I said, “If you’ll remember, I fastened my return with a paper clip, which according to your very own latest government pentagon spending figures will more than make up for the difference.” – Emo Philips

Gavin Roskamp, I’m fairly certain we’ll find that it was an act of espionage or similar, nothing for the average user to fear.

I did see a desktop box shoot flames out of the power supply once while talking to a potential client. I was being interviewed to replace his IT service company. They have been my client for ten years now. No more flame outs though having seen that it has always been in the back of my mind that that could happen anytime. I’ll never know if it would have caught the place on fire because I unplugged the machine as soon as I felt I could get near it.

orbiker, and you had nothing to do with it? (g)
If you’re around electronics long enough, you’re bound to see what is known as a spectacular failure. You got lucky, you saw one early on.

Not spectacular failure, but rather “Catastrophic failure”
ie: A senior official of the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said today “an explosion” which occurred August 18 at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant was a life-threatening “catastrophic failure.”
