Indian Cruise Missiles?

From a Russian news site, RIA Novosti, is an article that the Indian government has test fired (successfully) its own version of cruise missiles.

NEW DELHI, March 29 (RIA Novosti) - India has successfully tested the latest land attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile at a firing range in Pokhran, a spokesman for Russian-Indian joint venture BrahMos Aerospace Limited said Sunday.
The spokesman said that the missile had successfully hit its designated target.
The BrahMos missile has a range of 290 km (180 miles) and can carry a conventional warhead of up to 300 kg (660 lbs). It can effectively engage ground targets from an altitude as low as 10 meters (30 feet) and has a top speed of Mach 2.8, which is about three times faster than the U.S.-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.
Analysts estimate that India could purchase up to 1,000 BrahMos missiles for its armed forces in the next decade, and export 2,000 to other countries during the same period.
During a recent visit by Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov to India, the two sides agreed to develop a hypersonic version of the missile to be known as BrahMos-2.
I then tried to get confirmation on BBC Online, and got nothing. However, a Google search came up with this UPI release.
NEW DELHI, March 4 (UPI) — A new version of India’s BrahMos cruise missile was successfully tested Wednesday at a firing range in the Rajasthan desert, officials said.
India’s Defense Research and Development Organization indicated that the launch of a new version of the supersonic missile with a 180-mile range was successful after an earlier test firing failed to hit its target, the Press Trust of India reported.
“The Block II BrahMos missile was successfully launched at (10:30 a.m.) this morning,” officials told PTI, adding that BrahMos “took two-and-a half-minutes to strike its target in the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan.”
Officials said the test launch was witnessed by Deputy Army Chief (Planning and Systems) Lt. Gen. M.S. Dadwal among others. In a Jan. 20 test of the Indo-Russian joint venture, the missile deviated from its course and failed to hit the target, the news agency said.
First, do we really want the Indians working with the Russians? Second, notice the date differences on the two articles. Third, I keep up with news by various means, and have seen nothing about this on any domestic news broadcast (including the NewsHour on PBS).
It seems as though we might be concentrating too much on the people in Pakistan, and instead need to worry about the entire area (what used to be referred to as the Sub-continent).
And to think all of this started out with an innocent look at the new Miss Russia! (linked from reddit.com)

So do you believe that only US can/should develop/have cruise missile?
Or is your concern more around how India partner with Russians to to create this not with someone else?

Vidata, my concern is that no one needs cruise missiles, and , I believe that India’s technical proficiency is being taken advantage of by the Russians, who also are looking more militaristic than in the last few years.
The world needs fewer weapons, not more.

Does it make you feel better? go and preach to pakistanis and chinese, and i am sure what reception you would get !!

Bharat, does it make you feel one bit safer?
I would guesstimate that 5 of our warheads would remove what is known as India from the current quagmire without much trouble.
Do threatening statements get either of us anywhere?

The author seems to be jealous of indian missile power. India is no north korea or china or pakistan who use the missile technology as a barter product to other countries in return for some favour. We are a responsible nuclear power and a powerful economy. We have missiles for defence and not for offence like china and pakistan and north korea who are rogue nations.

There is nothing wrong in analyzing another country’s military capabilities but please refer to credible websites. India like the US has 100s of media channels who have no clue about tactical and strategic weapons. Most of the times they end up being a lower end mediators for foreign weapons manufacturers.
If you want to know the true capabilities of India refer to http://www.bharatrakshak.com.
Oracle, I’ll let u know a small secret !!
India has already test fired an ICBM Agni III, which can reach as far as California in the west and New Hampshire in the east. I’ll give a brief summary of range and payload configuration from http://www.bharatrakshak.com defense website.
Range depends on the payload. 50% reduction in payload can double the range.
India already has Agni I (700 to 1500 km), Agni II (2500 to 3500 km) in its arsenal. India is working on Agni II (AT), an extended version of Agni II. Its range would be 3500 to 16,000 km with smaller payload. Note- India can make Agni II(AT) with a smaller payload as an ICBM. Why do we need Agni III and Agni V then? Good question.
Both Agni III and Agni V will have ICBM range and a heavier payload.
Agni III range goes like this
5000 km @ 1500 kg
10,000 km @ 750 kg
20,000 km @ 350 kg (Thermo-nuclear payload)
I don’t think, after going through the source I provided, you are going to feel that safe.

I don’t know about the nationality and the position of the author and it doesn’t concern me at all. What does concern me as an Indian is that people always seem to have something against Indians militarizing. It is OK if China does it. Pakistan does it with the aid of US of A. And India can’t even prepare herself for a possible conflict? North Korea test fired nuke bombs, and what sort of sanctions have been pressed against them? yeah right. a few cursory sanctions. Only the ones that they had to. And still they fear some sort of reckless actions by North Korea. America literally fucks around with India knowing India to be a non-aggressive nation that we are. And India still feels the need to rational and “well behaved”! May be it is not to bad an idea to be a little reckless after all. May be the wheel has to be squeaky to get some oil.
That said, I am not anti-American. I just find them a little misguided and far from reality as far as the situation in Indian subcontinent is concerned.

Param, I am an American, with lineage that has to go back 200 years to not be from America.
However, that doesn’t really matter if you realize that I don’t like any side talking about the capability of delivering nuclear payloads. It is also not lost on me that I am from the only nation that has ever delivered one.
I am basically a peace loving person who believes that it is naive to think that total disarmament is possible, but it should be limited.
What I don’t know about is how much of a threat China is to India (today), and from all I read and study, agression from Pakistan is of the covert type, where a direct response would be looked upon as first action, and might provoke a full war.
The Indians who have responded to this seem to be quite militant, I remain wondering why.

I am an Indian and my lineage will have to be taken back 4000 years to not be from India. So you must consider me rational if i am 20 times more emotional about my country than you are about yours.
That being out of the way, let’s come to what you said.
May be we are militant. And to put you out of your wondering, i will tell you why.
Pakistan has been waging a war against India which can never directly be traced back to its government. And world-aware of this “proxy war”- would still take Indian action as first aggression?
Do you know what makes us so emotional about this issue?
Some terrorists from our dearly beloved neighboring nation recently paid us a visit and executed serial blasts all over the country. About 7 in the city where I live. Are you aware that they targeted hospitals to inflict the maximum damage? They made these massive bombs and placed them in car which they in turn parked in the parking near the emergency ward of the civil hospital(public hospital of my city).
Many already wounded who were being rushed to the hospital died along with doctors, nurses and medical students of the college who offered to help the doctors.
Hell.my father who was already on the way to the hospital to help where he is a doctor could have died had he been already on duty.
You must agree that one’s perception changes a little after seeing this monstrous cold blooded act of mass-murder.
As far as the nuclear warfare is concerned,India has “No First Strike” policy. On the other hand many Pakistani officials have confessed to their leaders having been ready to administer “first strike” of nuclear weapons on several occasions.
On 13th December,2001 some “visitors” from our sweet neighbor came and attacked Indian Parliament. The members having felt that fear themselves for the first time, shitted in pants and the government ordered a huge force to be mobilized on the Pakistan front. Seeing an army of 200000 men, Pak Government itself shitted in pants and started peace talks but before that they had considered a nuclear strike and were hinting heavily about it but seeing that India remained resolute and realizing that they themselves would not come out alive out of a nuclear conflict with India, they gave in and started peace talks a once.
Had the power balance not been greatly in favor of India, would Pakistan have refrained from a nuclear strike?
I should think not.
“If you want peace, prepare for war.”
And since America would not stop Pakistan from increasing their missile arsenal because it is for the “War against Terror”,India must do so with theirs. And since Russia is the only nation that would agree upon joint development of missiles we must do it with them.
Your brain might be unwashed but your eyes need a little cleansing to see the light.
(nothing personal, brother. it is all in the name of the country.)

Param, one question. What then, is the disharmony between India and Pakistan based-upon, if not governmental difficulties? Is it religious? (Though, to my way of thinking, it should not be, as there are Muslims in both countries.)
Param

It has never been religious-not at least from India’s side. India is the second largest Muslim nation in the world and here they have more freedom than they would have in Pakistan.
The armed forces of India have always been under strong control of civilian government that has taken military action only when it was the sole option. We have gone to war only when it was inevitable. Pakistan, however, has been ruled by military rulers half the time it has been in existence.
The root of discord is Kashmir and I will tell you how.
The Britishers never intended India to take the form it has right now. They knew that India was a superpower before they(the Britishers) came here and India would again be one if they didn’t do anything about it. They didn’t want India to be another America.
So they divided the nation in two major parts India and Pakistan. When India and Pakistan gained their freedom;Kashmir, Hyderabad(currently-Andhra Pradesh of India) etc. were also given freedom and were given option to be an independent nation or to join either India or Pakistan.
Rulers of a few states wanted to join Pakistan despite of the fact that they were surrounded by India and also despite of the fact that the vast majority of the public wanted to be a part of India. Some of them were talked out of doing it and some were forced out of doing it.
Kashmir wanted to be a free state but Pakistan had other plans. The Pakistani army and militia jointly attacked Kashmir and were nearing shreenagar-the capital of Kashmir. Fearing that he would be left with nothing in his hands the king of Kashmir Hari Singh(who was a Hindu, by the way) asked for help from India and joined the Indian republic . Indian army mobilized immediately against Pakistani army in Kashmir and was driving them back already when UN forced a ceasefire on India.
In this situation, the fair thing would have been to order Pak army beyond the boundary of Kashmir but they let them have the part of Kashmir they had occupied. This was the first of the many unfair decisions that went Pakistan’s way.
Since then every Pakistani government has demanded Kashmir and has indulged in the sort of propaganda that would have given Goebbels inferiority complex. An average Pakistani thinks that Indian army is full of thugs and rapists who murder for fun.
See, the demands for Kashmir are only a decoy for Pakistani government to distract their people from the real problems. Pakistan would have been bankrupt by now,had America not been aiding it. their educational system and health care system is going to the dogs. The democracy will never have a strong foothold there because of the army.
India can never let go of Kashmir because it is rightfully theirs and Pakistan would always press the Kashmir button as soon as they think the public sentiment is rising against the government.
Moreover, Pakistan is only now taking some actions against the Taliban but they are not doing anything against the terrorist groups that carry out terrorist activities in India.
In fact,on many occasions, the terrorists that have been killed have been found in possession of arms and grenades that pak army uses.
And Pak Government still refuses to take actions citing the inadequacy of proofs-which is merely technical. Since the terrorist acts are carried out on Indian soil they can’t be taken as crimes in Pakistan. And Pakistan never hands them over to India so that they can be tried.Seeing this one gets the feeling that Pakistan doesn’t want those terrorists to be tried and punished.
“You can wake up someone who is asleep but you can never wake up some one who is pretending to be asleep.”
That said, Indian government has been at fault too. But they have only been guilty of being far too soft on the matters of national security.
