Are You Interested In “Wearable Technology”?

I have just watched an episode (episode?) of Make, on one of the local PBS stations, where a woman was running around to a number of fabric stores, sewing stores, and various other places in the manner of a whirling dervish to obtain things for “wearable technology”.
The idea behind this is perhaps less utilitarian and more fashion chic, as the woman was making various garments that did things such as emitting sounds, or lighting up at various times, or continuously in various colors. At no time was anything like the technology featured on Scientific American Frontiers where various versions of clothing featured things like solar cells to enable the recharging of cell phones while walking or use of Walkman devices without batteries.
Still other programs have highlighted clothing that will do things such as illuminate a bicycle riders back at night, when receiving the faintest light as an automobile approaches the rider from behind. Taken to the extreme, students at MIT have fashioned clothing that features the various parts of a computer in a jacket, with a screen attached to the wearer’s glasses, and fingertip to thumb touch using both hands to fashion commands.
Although strides are being made to make the additions to the clothing less intrusive, and lighter, that too will eventually have its own set of problems. What happens when Mom washes her son’s $1200 computer jacket, because the additions are so unobtrusive as to be invisible to the untrained eye?

As long as it doesn’t chafe and cause one to itch unbearably then this type of wearable technology may be worthwhile. Seriously, I think some of the garments on on Scottevest are definitely designed with technology utilization in mind. The costs for some may be reasonable, but it’s not really for the mass market or is it?
Well gotta run I think my “Get Smart” shoe is ringing.

a) There’s no reason for a kid to EVER have a $1,200 jacket, computerized or otherwise.
b) If a kid DID get a $1,200 computer jacket without informing his parents, he/she deserves what he/she gets when mom washes the thing.
