AMD, Best Friend a Builder Could Have

Once again, AMD has proven that it is committed to being the builder’s friend, giving power at a great price. The very newest processors are coming down in price, and have been shown to be within a gnat’s eyelash of Intel i7 performance on many tasks.
from ZDNet
AMD has officially released new Phenom II processors in both triple and quad core flavors and priced them to undercut Intel’s Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad lines.
The Phenom II X3 triple core parts are available with clock speeds of either 2.6GHz (model 710) or 2.8GHz (model 720) and priced at $125 and $145 respectively. This pricing means that the 2.8GHz model is $20 less and 20% faster at 3D processing than Intel’s Core 2 Duo E8400.
The Phenom II X4 quad core parts run at 2.6GHz (model 810)and 2.8GHz (model 920) and are priced $175 and $195 respectively. Performance-wise the 810 is slightly faster than Intel’s Core 2 Quad Q8200 and comes in at only $5 more.
Both the Phenom II X3 and X4 processors use 45nm architecture and all except the 920 have a TDP of 95W (the 920 has a TDP of 125W).
AMD’s price list can be viewed here.
(Thanks, Adrian)
The question is, can AMD cut margins to the bone, and have enough left for R&D? It needs working capital, and with the debt load of the ATi acquisition not yet paid, I wonder how well the company can be doing.
I know that, on principle, I have been buying AMD over Intel for a few years. Others I know do also. With the 45nm Opterons now showing such great numbers within a very low thermal envelope, it is certain that AMD is recovering some of the ground lost in the past couple of years.
Go, AMD, you make computers better for all (Intel fans, you know it’s true!).

that will ot help AMD. If only if they could produce a 2.8 ghz phenom ll with TDP @ 45W or less then they will crown for many more months that would generate profit and put them back on track.
In my honest opinion, AMD should focus on making high end quad core phenom with less than 6W TDP on each core loaded with larger L1 cache and L2 cache. Then apply the strategy, market the CPU as both, laptop & desktop. Safe lots of AMD production costs. The speed must somewhere around 3.0 ghz or higher.
To further put itself to the top of the hill, AMD should apply the same technology on it’s ATI GPU. A high speed ultra low TDP (6W) duo-core GPU for built-in mobo with quad-HDMI displays enable with millions colors in 3D. OEM for laptop or desktop.
