2 TB Here, and Looking Good!

notice that the Molex connector is gone? Too bad.

The Western Digital 2 TB drives are here, and Loyd Case at PC Magazine’s Extreme Tech has a very enlightening review.

The drives will be fast, cheap green, and… hopefully reliable. The drives are covered with a 3 year warranty, and no notices of any backing off by WD means that, unlike Seagate, and the 7200.11 Barracudas, they won’t be reducing the 3 year warranty any time soon.

Three years makes me warm and fuzzy. How about you?

Loyd warns about possible problems with older drive controllers not being able to handle drives this large, but I really don’t think I can remember a single controller (keep in mind this is SATA interface) that would hiccup with this.

I’ll be waiting until the price drops a little (and it will) and then jumping on a few of them, at least one for every computer in the house.  I’ll justify it by congratulating myself on the green aspects of it; this is the same logic used each time a new LCD monitor replaces a CRT!

For those not desiring such spaciousness, the same technology will yield 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 TB drives.  The differences in price should make all but the most frugal opt for the big boy pictured above.
