E-Mail:

Will Yahoo Survive, and Does It Matter?

After reading an article on Information Week, titled ‘Microsoft, Google, And Yahoo: One Doesn’t Belong’, I can’t help but wonder if Yahoo will survive the entirety of this calendar year.

The article speaks about how Microsoft has timed perfectly the policy of paying users to use their search engine. After all, if you have more time than money, why not try to accumulate some of the latter?

The article states that the economically challenged were in the habit of using Yahoo, rather than Google to find what they were looking for. There is no explanation given for this, and I’m sure that the answer to that question would be far more interesting than how Yahoo will not survive Microsoft’s openly dirty tactics.

Another question I’d like to see answered is if the new head of Yahoo will actually receive the reported $1 million salary if her only actions are to divide up the company to gain the highest profit for the stockholders. This is the worst tactic of corporate America, shown so well by the ‘Larry the Liquidator’ character played by Danny DeVito in ‘Other People’s Money’. Cut rate tactics certainly only deserve cut rate pay.

This reinforces my decision to completely abandon all PPC efforts in 2009, in favor of snail mail to existing customers, in-package flyers, and advertising specialties.

Too many people with nothing better to do than click around with no intention of buying anything. I can’t afford to buy all those useless clicks.

I have Internet service with ATT and my email is through Yahooo, but I could not stand to get my mail from the Yahoo Site because it was so slow and flashy. I have no problem when I use Thunderbird to get my email. I know lots of people who like Yahoo, so I hope they don’t go under. My little Eee PC with XP came with Microsoft Live Mail, but I never got it working, Heck I couldn’t even get Outlook Express to work so installed Thunderbird and immediately started downloading my mail!

yes it matters thanks for pointing out things i never thought about when i got the free tshirt, webcam and headphones i never thought about it undermining the company that provides a better email service i send my spam to hotmail and my good mail to yahoo but now i’m switching it all to yahoo because hotmail is not compatible with opera which is what is on the wii so i think nintendo and sony internet surfers will keep it a float a little

Urban Underbrink, you’re right about the speed of Yahoo Mail. It is massively underpowered.

Betty b, isn’t e-mail on a wii a chore? I can’t imagine using anything like that for e-mail, but then I get upwards of 200 non-spam messages per day.

‘Microsoft, Google, And Yahoo: One Doesn’t Belong’

The answer is microsoft! Yahoo is the web, microsoft is a sad imitator with lots of money.

If Yahoo goes under, I’ll be really upset. I’ve used Yahoo! Mail for 8 years now; it’s easily the client I recommend. I’m currently a Yahoo Mail Plus user, as well. I even use Yahoo for my Xbox.com messages! I sure as hell won’t use Windows Live, though, if I lose Yahoo. That, like Betty b, is my ’spam’ account. I will most likely use GMail, my secondary account.

Logan, you have to be retarded to say that.

‘Microsoft, Google, And Yahoo: One Doesn’t Belong’

The answer is microsoft! Yahoo is the web, microsoft is a sad imitator with lots of money.

Really? What do you call WINDOWS? What did you just type your message on? A COMPUTER? Yeah, Microsoft most likely made that… retard! You should at least learn who makes your computer before saying they are a sad imitator of a company that is useless in my opinion with lots of money. Yahoo copied AOL in the 90’s with AOL’s mail and everything. It’s a shame that AOL is pretty much lower than anything in terms of usage. AIM isn’t even popular now… Not that I favor AOL over my favorites like Google, it’s just that AOL deserves to be in the competition again.

Anyway, you should really think about… thinking… before you post a comment. Plus, Microsoft makes MSN Messenger (Windows Live now) and HOTMAIL and MSN.com and all the wonderful services that teenagers use way too much. (Teenagers except me, I’m a Google/Apple based teen.)

Gavin Roskamp, yes, you are apparently a teenager that learned no manners, so please, you’re welcome here, but only without the personal attacks.

I’m sure if you try you can state your point without the vitriol.

Can’t really imagine losing my Yahoo! mail. In fact I have two. When it comes to the Phillipines, Yahoo’s mail is the best and most stable compared to Google’s gmail and Micro$oft’s Hotmail. And it’s the oldest as far as my own experience – used it since 1998 when the Internet was just four years young in my country.

Another point, besides e-mail I’m a news buff and an avid sports fan. Personally, the fastest way to get news is through Yahoo (local Philippine situation, ok). NBA, Tennis, politics – you name it, Yahoo has it and faster, too (compared to using NBA.com or AustralianOpen.com for example).

Remember, if you’re in the Philippines Yahoo is No. 1…

Yahoo mail can be a little slow at times. And it’s search i feel is second to Google. But as a Portal it’s good.Microsoft search i dont like as much nor depend on.So if better maybe i should check it out.I depend on Yahoo mail quite a bit and has several accounts.I feel it’ll be around. But worry about what shape it’ll be in.And who it’ll merge with. And what will it be called then.

Junbal, thanks for the comment. It’s good to know Yahoo is fast for some.

For me, it is very slow, but then I’m talking about mail retrieval.

I don’t depend on it for news, I look to MSN for that, and also BBC online.

Since several of you seem to depend on Yahoo, I’m sure that it is fine in some areas, and for certain needs. If it wasn’t so, Yahoo would have ceased to exist. I remember when I started using the internet back in ‘92, it was the first and remained 1st until Google came into being.

Well first windows mail with the updates works fine. Outlook express is old and out of date. Thunderbird is a good alternative. Heck even OpenOffice can now edit documents made in with Office 2007. I hope Yahoo survives as I use them for my mail. They are the fastest site to get mail from depending on if you use wireless…(slow and unreliable) Yahoo is fast if your connction speed is fast. The site does depend on how fast your connection is. So before people in this thread blame sites for being slow first know your connection speed. Thats just a word to the wise. Secondly, dont ask stupid questions. Otherwise techs give you stupid answers.

John Everett… it’s not Yahoo!’s fault. If they click through at all, they’ve done their job. Your site needs to be improved… make it more relevant. When someone goes there, can they find what you advertised they wanted quickly and easily? They maybe “useless” clicks because you’ve designed a site they can’t find anything on. And why by from you? You’re assuming they are useless buyers when they might be good buyers finding your site useless…

Well at any point….any user of Yahoo should definitely think about backing up their important emails and storing them somewhere else.

Sad, but true….Google isn’t going anywhere and no matter how big Microsoft has screwed up it isn’t going anywhere. Google, we know why. Microsoft I don’t get. I finally get away from it at home and then I open my own business and everything is ran by Microsoft unless there is a med/large server area/farm that runs linux, which is not done by your typical business.

Honestly, either way I could careless (no offense to anyone who directly uses whatever service). I do have a gmail account but it’s for “whatever” mail. I use it to order things online and to do…whatever, but you should spend the money a month (~$3) to have a real email service. Free is good for a “Spam” account, but not much less. Even your ISP’s provider I don’t trust. There was a cable ISP company in the mid-west I think and they routinely deleted email accounts that hadn’t been accessed in so many months. Well the tech who did it accidently deleted all the account who have been used in the 6 months and they had no backup. So…depending on how important email is to you, it’s good to weigh your options. I prefer going with an exchange server. It’s $15 a month but well worth it, especially if you are mobile a lot.

cnlevo, good points.

Depending on what you use at your business, you might want to look into LotusLive, which is about to be released by IBM.

I don’t know anything about pricing, but it might be a good fit for you.
