Economic Slump Hits Memory Adoption
Reported today is the fact that DDR3 memory is not on the road it once was. The economy has derailed yet another traveler on the way to wide acceptance.
Intel reports that the latest processors (Nehalem) and the corresponding motherboards are not selling as quickly as previously thought. The Core series processors are doing much better, as they are cheaper to acquire, and don’t require the expensive motherboards and DDR3 memory to run. To businesses with mounting losses and looming layoffs, this is a much easier route to take.
AMD has only recently announced the use of DDR3 with its Phenom II processors, so its line has no use for the more expensive memory at this moment.
Should the economy bounce back, both of these companies will be ready to move on to much higher usage of the higher speed memory.
No word on how this will affect the development of the next memory standard. Will any work be postponed, or will it continue unabated? If that happens, will DDR 3 possibly fall by the wayside, due to timing, much in the way that RDRAM was bypassed by most manufacturers.
