Windows 7 Downloads Continue Past 2.5 Million

Mary-Jo Foley, from ZDNet reports that Microsoft is going to allow the downloading of Windows 7 past the originally specified 2.5 million due to the fact that the servers were futzed during the original time stated. Now, we are told that Microsoft will allow 2 weeks worth of downloading the beta, to anyone who wants it, and that the keys are not going to be limited either.
Although she has her reasons as to why, I prefer to think it just might be that someone had already discovered that Microsoft had been using the same 10 keys repeatedly, with 5 assigned as 32 bit keys, and the other 5 as 64 bit keys. After looking at what someone else I know downloaded, I see that it is possibly (probably) true.
Beyond that, the early reports of people having no problems with installs, and being amazed by it, translates to good PR for Microsoft, and they need all they can get these days.
So, there are the 2 most probable reasons for the increased time to obtain the beta. Sorry, no news about any extension of the time-to-die date.

Wonder what software company uses this as it’s motto?

Up until this morning (monday 12th jan 09), I hadn’t been able to get the Beta download. First off, i had trouble with the d/l manager MS is using to d/l the Beta, but now have it up and running. It would have been more handier if I could have been able to use my own d/l manager.
Secondly, it’s going to take me a few days to d/l Win7 as i only have a 256kb/s broadband, which of course is shared with my girlfriend and her 2 kids, so I hope I can still fit the d/l before MS takes it off the servers.

Geenome, I’d say it might be best to get a copy from someone else, verify the SHA1 value, and burn it.
Over two weeks, you must know someone with a speedy connection willing to share.
Good luck.

No need to worry about the die date…. if like most Windows it’ll crash and die of natural causes.
