Volkswagen Debuts 282MPG Car!

Volkswagen has decided to push up a vehicle that wasn’t scheduled to be constructed until 2012. The era of ridiculous gas prices has made it necessary to bring out the One Litre Car vehicle, once a concept, but now a way for owners to thumb their noses at high prices.

The 660 pound car, constructed with scads of carbon fiber, delivers 282 miles per gallon.

It looks weird, but it’s very efficient, with a small engine and drag coefficient lower than any current car. It will cost an estimated 30 to 40 thousand dollars, but so do Hummers, and think of how much gas you’ll save while not driving a military vehicle.

Kind of reminds me of a torpedo for two! Either that or a new louge vehicle.

Is something like this in your future? If about half of us had one, the Saudis could keep their oil, and the Bush’s would cry, but so what – the planet would be a lot greener too.

Observations:

1. it has 3.5 more horsepower than my lawnmower

2. I don’t have 30-40k. Wonder why so expensive.

3. it looks like it would be frightening to ride in, as well as incredibly bumpy due to low center of gravity

My buddy drives a scooter. He gets something like 80+ mpg. He enjoys the hell out of it but it has at least two too few wheels for me. You also have to be *very* careful to be seen and twice as careful to watch for others who don’t (or won’t) see you.

These things should be bright obnoxious green, not black.

It also shows what is possible when you’re over the proverbial (oil) barrel.

The paint would adversely affect the power to weight ratio!

A friend of mine brought home a 1953 Messerschmidt 3 wheel auto that looks very similar to the Volkswagen design. Both German engineering

Les, so your saying that there was no original thinking at VW? (g)

I’d like to see a BMW version.
