What Allows GOP Members To Suspend Disbelief?

I am constantly amazed by a few things with members of the Republican Party.

Probably the first would be the way that people who are down in the lower rungs of the economy are somehow drawn in by the GOP and are fully willing to vote against their own interests. No one has ever been able to explain this to me to any degree of satisfaction.

Another point of interest is the way that many members of the GOP are laser focused upon a single issue, ignoring others far more pressing on their daily lives. An easy example would be those who vote Republican solely due to their disagreement with Roe v. Wade. This presupposes that some sort of referendum might come up during the term of the person voted for, which in this case is highly unlikely, as between 62% and 65% of the country, depending upon whose figures you trust, believe that the decision should be entrusted to women. While not overwhelming, it is far beyond a simple majority of opinion.

By far, the most amazing thing to me has been the way that GOP members are able to ‘move beyond reality’ and suspend disbelief. Tonight, on the Larry King show (CNN), a couple of economists were on, discussing the state of the economy. Ben Stein, professor and part-time actor, was the Republican voice, and with every statement continued to play down the poor state of the economy, that had been confirmed by many outside the studio, just previously. When asked about the state of the recession, he countered that there was, in fact, no recession. He was quick to assert, once again, a position that causes my blood pressure to rise about 30 points. Gasoline is still a bargain, and we should be thankful we don’t pay more. While it is clear that we should be thankful that we don’t pay more, that is little comfort to those suffering from the high prices. It is also a poor frame of reference for a good argument. Postulating that things aren’t bad, because of the assertion that they could be worse is simply ludicrous, and the worst kind of premise.

When Ben went into his ‘this is still a great country’ spiel, who could disagree? However, this is a poor substitute for the clarity that others have shown – not bashing the country, but at the same time acknowledging that by comparison to what most are used to, the standard of living is slipping badly.

The perpetual cheer when discussing the economy, coupled with the perpetual suspicion in matters of state makes for an outlook that can only be described as manic depressive. How so many can hold this belief system, and operate on these premises is truly incredulous.

this is tech news? The crazed rants just made me unsubscribe.

This, to someone, is a crazed rant? I thought this rather even-tempered. Practically sedate, given the issue. Thirty points? Nothin’. The ostrich-emulating antics of the general populace continually bring *me* to the brink of an aneurysm. The other one I never understand is why people keep buying into the “deregulation will bring down prices” mythology. Didn’t work for the banks in the 80’s - we had to bail them out. Didn’t work for airlines, planes were falling out of the skies in the 90’s. Didn’t work for cable television, rates skyrocketed. Didn’t work (in Connecticut, anyway) for electricity, ditto on the skyrocketing prices. Yet, every time you turn around, they parrot the same myth. Bush is the epitome of the Republican philosophy of governance: Keep repeating a lie even in the face of contrary evidence, and never let your own memory go back farther than yesterday’s Republican soundbite. Hecuvajob, Brownie!

‘gnome,

Will you get off the political rants and stick to tech. We hear enough of this crap from the MSM, cable, media, etc. I fear that you have been infected by the ‘left-coast liberal’ virus!

I bet the ones who are complaining are Republicans.

:)

Only true liars are the democrats. In their lies, they’ve convinced you America is a crap nation and that its citizens can’t think for themselves and always need a handout.

Just look at the retarded 1.5 Billion spent on free converter boxes.

The government intervening is the reason for high prices. Gasoline could be alot cheaper if we could drill our own oil. Health care would be alot cheaper if citizens know how much they were really paying when they went to doctor x or pharmacy y. And all that regulation on banks from the 80s sure worked well for the current subprime “crisis”? Didn’t it?

No more government handouts, they need out of the healthcare business, the oil business, the charity business and the retirement business and stick to laws and law enforcement period.

Martin Kruse, although I tend to vote Democrat, I can see some of the logic you put forth. Unfortunately, it is the Republicans that have lied to us for the past 28 years (yes, since Bonzo)

The problem with your assertions is that the Republicans are no better than the Dems, the difference is who the government handouts benefit.

The Dems want government to help the many, the Republicans the elite few.

Also, as Lewis Black is fond of saying, The Dems are the party of no ideas, the Reps are the party of bad ideas.

Think about all the unnecessary laws the Reps have put into effect in the last 28 years - and don’t fool yourself, the Reps have been in enough control, one way or another for that long. Even in the Clinton years, the good ideas had to be diluted to be palatable to the Republicans.

So because of that, I could see myself voting for Ron Paul, if I thought there was any chance in hell he could win. And yes, a short period of that type of ‘rule’ could be a good thing, beginning with the repeal of many stupid, unnecessary laws from the past 100 or so years.

Unfortunately, the Republicans (the ones in name, and in power) have simply shown that they are not the party of Lincoln, just a party that wishes to benefit themselves, at the cost of everything else.

And it is not delusional to say that, while life may be better here than elsewhere on Earth, it has gotten worse in the last 30 years - it is simple fact.

BTW, your comment about the DTV boxes shows that you know little about that fiasco - it was the Reps concession for the spectrum grab that that party was undertaking. DTV transition never needed to change the frequencies of transmission, that idea is a complete fallacy. Besides the changeover is part of the Deficit Reduction Bill of 2005. That reduction was necessary due to the fighting of an unprovoked war, by an idiot that never served a day in the ‘real’ military, and has been proven to have been absent from the duty he was gotten into by his father.

Thanks for the comment.
