MinWin in ‘7’? Don’t Count It Out Yet!

Mary-Jo Foley, in a very carefully crafted piece, today shows why the furor over the use of a minimum size kernel just might be a part of Windows 7, the upcoming release from Microsoft.
In a very few paragraphs, she shows how cagey the people at Microsoft have all been, trying to be precise with what they say, but not so precise as to be pinned down on any one concept. She gives the example of Bill Gates being coy with the Justice Department for a very long time over the single word ‘we’.
It is this type of word play that seems to excite all who work at Microsoft, and either confound or provoke those who don’t. Plain talk is something that neither politicians nor executives from Redmond, Washington seem to be adept at.
Yet she does weave the story so carefully, citing examples of personal conversation and announcements, leading us to believe she just might know something she is not allowed to speak of. The plausible answer to the use of the minWin kernel without any fanfare is to allow no ruffling of the many feathers already dissatisfied or disgusted with Vista. She posits that for that reason, Microsoft might be withholding changes in the underpinnings of Windows, so that a stable yet updated release is what will be delivered come 2010, or thereabouts.
FUD never sleeps.
