More News (Ahem) About Windows 7

Well, Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has new about the successor to Vista from the horse’s mouth, so to speak.

In a small piece about Windows 7, Chris Flores, of Microsoft basically points out the usual garbage that Microsoft spews, along with news that makes Adrian believe that ‘7′ will be Vista SP2, with a few factors changing its rude manners.

The refinements in ‘7′ are going to make for a better experience, and we’ll have fewer problems with everyday computing. (Where have I heard this drivel before? Oh, yes, at a sales meeting for Vista on a Microsoft Roadshow event a couple of years ago. )

from the ZDNet article

Another question we often get asked is whether Windows 7 is a major release. The answer is “yes”  – it’s hard to describe any product that is used by millions of people and worked on by thousands of engineers as anything else. That said, the long-term architectural investments we introduced in Windows Vista and then refined for Windows Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 will carry forward in Windows 7. Windows Vista established a very solid foundation, particularly on subsystems such as graphics, audio, and storage.

It is a good thing this guy from Microsoft did not have to write anything new for the speech. He must have had the original Vista drivel right there, in his pocket protector.

That is what Microsoft calls  I-N-N-O-V-A-T-I-O-N, funny, I spell it T-I-R-E-D and U-S-E-L-E-S-S.

OK, the train to Linux town is leaving on track 2 around the end of June of this year…all aboard, first stop Ubuntu, followed closely by Fedora, SuSE, and oh yes, were making special stops at FreeBSD!

Hello,

The build number for Windows 2000 is 5.0.3700.6690 (with SP4) and for Windows XP it is 5.1.2600.5512 (for SP3), so both those builds are based on the “5.x” codebase. Perhaps we will see something similar with Windows Vista (my copy says it is build 6.0.6001) and whatever Windows 7 becomes. I think XP was a worth successor to 2000, and expect “Windows 7″ to be the same for XP.
