File under : What were the overseers at Windows Update thinking?
Last week, an update cam through for users that have IDT sound chips on their motherboards. IDT used to be known as SigmaTel, and so many of you know these chips are found on many Intel motherboards. This update, specified as IDT High Def Codec, when installed causes the sound to stop working entirely, and in the Control Panel a Code 10 error is shown. Code 10 errors are indicative of resource allocation problems, and are sometimes difficult for the non-expert to resolve. This update seems to specifically target many Dell customers, and they are quite peeved.
At this point, there is no news on a fix, and the Dell customer service is simply telling their customers to either uninstall the Vista update or deselect it if the update has not yet been done.
With all eyes on Microsoft because of the problems with Vista to date, and the uproar over the Yahoo buyout, perhaps someone in charge at the Windows Update site should have tested this on a system before allowing it to be released.
Simple quality control appears to be well buried at Microsoft these days - someone should spend some money on this.

Hello,
This sounds like a problem with a device driver IDT released, not Microsoft.
It might be more interesting to determine how IDT got a WHQL logo on a device driver that is failing in so many installations. Perhaps the Dell computers experiencing the problem have a custom version of the codec chip installed in them?

Aryeh, it would indeed. I have often wondered how the process of certification works, as many times an nVidia driver set will say on their website that the WHCL cert is there, yet when I install, Windows complains that the driver is not certified. The only thing is, I have never had an nVidia driver cause problems with general operation of the computer.
Perhaps someone else will shed some light on the cert process. Thanks for the comment.

Microsoft could use this money to build the best OS in the world
and sell it at a reasonable price of $99.99!

Well,
Microsofty could send me a check for 50K, so I can pay my mortgage off before they come and carry me away.
One of my Senior friends lives in a Van in California? 38% of Americans are Homeless.
Speaks volumes for our Great People in Washington.

So, Robert:
Because you have gotten in over your head on a mortgage, through your own mismanagement of your money, that makes me, and the rest of America responsible, HOW?
And your friend lives in a van because he/she didn’t plan for retirement? Not my problem, nor is it Microsoft’s or Bill Gates’ problem.
And where are you getting your “facts” about 38% of American’s are homeless? How many are homeless by CHOICE? It’s a fact that 90% of all statistics on the internet are made up! So, basically, because someone can’t get their head out of their arse, I should be responsible for them? Maybe they should get a job, find a cheap place to live - even if they are retired. At least your “Senior Friend” has a van to live in. He/She could be living in a gutter!
Quit blaming everyone else for your inability to plan and prepare for the worst, and start accepting responsibility for your actions. You’ll find that you probably CAN make ends meet, and keep your house too, without becoming a welfare baby and living from government handout to government handout!

Claude, you’re absolutely right. But that would not allow all the millionaires at MS to fatten their share holdings.
I don’t begrudge money to inventive people, but MS has taken things a bit far lately, and in my opinion, it is their greed that fuels much ill will and pirating of the software produced.
Thanks for the comment.

Hello,
Two good sites for information about how the driver certification process works are the Windows Logo Program Overview Page at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/winlogo/, which contains information about how vendors develop certified drivers (amongst other things) and the Windows Quality Online Services page at https://winqual.microsoft.com/, where vendors can release certified device drivers to the Windows Update service.
