Just under a month ago, it was announced that ZDNet was in trouble, and had filed for Chapter 11 protection. Just a couple of days after that, the entire site changed.

The new site has links that work. The graphics look like they have been done by someone who did not grow up using Word Perfect 6 for DOS to lay out pages. Also, the ads that were once so intrusive as to be destructive of the experience of reading the articles, are toned down. Way, way down.

The new site has a completely different personality. It has become a pleasure to read, in a way that nothing since the days of Byte magazine. (Perhaps they got someone from that stock of great people.)

Although the bankruptcy filing is bad, the new site will, I’m sure, turn things around completely. Even the hacks who write there (that I won’t embarrass now) have improved their stories. It’s a win for everyone!
