Can Microsoft Juggle All the Balls?

With all the speculation about the Microsoft buyout of Yahoo, the unrelated purchase of Danger, and the less than spectacular update of Vista, it is almost mandatory to ask if the company is spreading the time and manpower too thin.

The buyout of Yahoo seems, for many, to be just a matter of time, so time must be budgeted for the takeoverwww.greenerchoices.org_media_yahoo_logo

- it is certain that the people left at Yahoo will need to be thoroughly indoctrinated in ‘the Redmond way’. Those forty hour weeks are going to be just a memory - it takes much more effort to spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt, along with coding things just well enough so that they work.

The buyout of Danger certainly means that a certain part of the workforce in Redmond will have to concentrate on the the ‘Apple beater’ that is to be the mPhone ( or possibly the ‘Gates to Communication’).

www.3g.co.uk_PR_October2002_TMobile will the ‘Gates to Communication’ look anything like the Sidekick - probably

The unspectacular arrival of SP1 for Vista promises that much more work will be needed to get the corporate sector to adopt it. Also, it is certain that Microsoft has gotten the message loud and clear that many corporate accounts will be waiting for whatever ‘7′ promises, as Vista isn’t getting much love from anyone who must do serious work on their computer. Garbage such as constantly changing wallpaper that puts CPU usage for a quad core machine above 30% cannot be expected to get a rise (or salute) from the corporate sector.

Will there be enough ‘oomph’ in the worker bees at the Redmond giant? Remember, there are only so many hours in a week (168, and not a second more), and until the robots take over coding chores, people, even Microsoft employees, need sleep.

www.megomuseum.com_teevee_images_robot remember what happens in many stories with robots?

It is quite true that Microsoft seems to have more spending cash than all but the largest of nations, but it will take people as well, and India has only so many people to offer. (Although that country is doing its best to overpopulate the earth further)

It must also be remembered that mediocrity WILL EVENTUALLY catch up to this company, and many will eschew any and all of its products…it has already started to happen with browsers, office suites, and, to a lesser but significant extent, operating systems.

Entropy                 will Microsoft fall victim to this master?

Inertia will carry a behemoth a long way, but it must be remembered that this is not the vacuum of space, and friction will eventually halt even a behemoth.
