Another Oops from Redmond…

With so little for Microsoft to celebrate over the past year, after defeats in Europe and Vista sales a depressing disappointment worldwide, the news breaks that a small bright spot, Windows Home Server, has some serious troubles.

So much a problem that Microsoft has issued a warning to users of the product derived from Server 2003. Something occurred in the derivation process, as now Microsoft admits that during periods of stress (high usage), the WHS product can corrupt files – specifically picture files. The problem is further complicated by the fact that the client side applications that cause the corruption are almost all from Redmond too.

The offending programs are Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, OneNote 2003 or 2007,  Outlook 2007, Money 2007, or SyncToy 2.0 Beta. Other non – MS programs may cause problems, but it is not verified. Anecdotal tales of problems with Quickbooks, Quicken, and torrent applications have been cited.

Microsoft does not yet seem to have a handle on the problem, as the only response from the company is to avoid using the offending programs until further notice.

Some might say that WHS was rushed to market, but then who knew that small changes to the solid Server 2003 code would break the model. It does seem to point to either changes in the dumbed-down UI or the strange way that the storage bounds are expanded and duplicated, neither of which I thought was a good idea at the outset.

300px-Jacques_Clouseau and Inspector Clouseau is on the case!

Again, the advice from Redmond is cold comfort to those wishing to use the advertised features of the program – “do not use the programs that are listed in this article to save or to edit program-specific files that are stored on a Windows Home Server-based system. You can still use the Windows Home Server home computer backup to back up and restore files from and to your home computers.”

“and Vista sales a depressing disappointment worldwide” – source?

tony bishop – rock?

tony, check any of the trade magazines, PC Magazine website, ZDNet website, and on and on ad nauseum. Vista is a flop in the terms that MS was hoping for a great adoption by millions who have ’seen the light’. They haven’t, it’s a pig, and the only ones who are happy with it are the people at MS and those who either don’t know any better, or have had low expectations for it.

Look at the articles focused on th number of Vista installed computers where the user/buyer is choosing to move (in MS parlance, downgrade) to XP. This allows them to have a workable solution now, and then when MS finally gets the majority of problems out, or quad-cores become ubiquitous, whichever comes first, those people can reinstall Vista.

The sources are many. The problem is out in the open. It is not much of a debate anymore.

Seems like Microsoft are just digging themselves a big hole since they brought out Vista, they still haven’t fixed the issues with the new OS and they are bringing out more software to create a bigger problem.

Look, I’m growing more confused, … exponentially, over this Vi$ta thing. I had vowed that I would not buy it for myself, and I’m still of that opinion; however, I have too many friends(?) who have bought it and are trying to use it and are suffering the slings and arrows of Bill Gates’ & Steve Ballmer’s outrageous fortunes (profits of doom, perhaps???).
I have thought it best to invest a small amount into perhaps an Acer 17″ laptop – so I can have the numeric keypad I want/need – and then I can recreate their problems and help them find solutions. I know; I don’t charge for such “help”, but it’s who/what I am.
From this, and other articles, I’m beginning to wonder if that is a wrong decision. I do not need or want Vi$ta. I certainly do not need extra hassle, but I also like to be of help.
So far, I have used old “legacy” solutions, and they have all been successful, but I’m drawn to wanting to be “useful”, even if Vi$ta is designed and bent on not being useful.
Any suggestions?

Wait a minute! I think your article has at least one “working” solution, … from Redmond itself:
“Microsoft does not yet seem to have a handle on the problem, as the only response from the company is to avoid using the offending programs until further notice.”

Maybe they should ship Vi$ta with that over the opening flap???

Ted, the problem is that the Vista problems aren’t as clearly defined. So many people don’t complain about the observed problems because they aren’t aware that the observed behavior should not be.

Also, the solution, in the short term is to tell your friends to downgrade to Vista, using a Microsoft method to install XP, that does not invalidate the Vista key – then when the repairs are done, and the pig can sing properly, a re-install of Vista can be done.

Have you tried to read anything on this page Webmaster? Black text on a background of a book with black text isn’t all that easy to read, but hey, maybe it’s just me.

Bart, I’m not the webmaster, but the author. I am sorry if you can’t read it, but it looks fine on all 3 of the machines that I use to check readability. I have looked at it with nVidia, ATi, and Intel graphics, and it renders fine on all 3.

The book that comes up has pages of parchment color, with black text – I would say this is easy for most. If you are not getting the parchment color, the first thing I would check is your monitor adjusments.
Next, check your browser – it displays fine for me in IE 7 and Opera 9.50, and my son uses Firefox 2 and it looks fine on his machine.

Also, when the text I write comes up, it is black on a white background – again, easy for most everyone to read.

Thanks, and let me know what it is.

Bart, I just wish the pictures were rendering. Since Chris did an upgrade last weekend, none of the pictures are rendering in any of my posts (since each is worth 1000 words, that would be a lot of writing!)
