One Last Christmas for the HP Camera Division

Those who need all things in their computer room to be branded Hewlitt Packard will have to hurry and buy a camera while the company is still making them. In an announcement Thursday, the company stated it will continue to produce cameras under its own name through the holidays and then an OEM company will design and distribute the new camera designs under the H-P name.

Three years ago, before the big shake ups at the company, H-P had decided to put forth a great effort to be a leader in digital cameras, committing 1 billion dollars to the effort. Now the move is being made away from cameras, and back to printing, where the company is a powerhouse, and wishes to put a huge effort into something it is calling Print 2.0.

With all the stupidly applied numbering schemes to web trends it is interesting to see where this will take H-P. Reported is an effort put together with ViaMichelin for printing of online maps, and with SixApart, the makers of a major blogging application.

The reported market share of H-P in cameras went down during the effort it made, so it will be interesting to see what happens in printing with this new effort.
