Sony Updates the PS2

Coming soon in Japan, is a new revision of the PS2 game console, just in time for the holidays. The new model is described as an updated model in a package that is a cross between the 1st and 2nd generation machines. The units will have a built in AC adapter, following the form of the original PS2s, but will be slim and lighter than the second generation consoles by about 5 ounces. It is unclear why that is important, but Sony makes that point firmly. When shipping millions of consoles, the weight would be important, but that really should not concern the average buyer.
The price is unchanged, at least in Japan, at 16,000 yen, which is about $140, so when the units hit here, the price should not differ. As a matter of fact, there might not be a big campaign covering the change, it might simply be left for the customer to discover. The Play Station 2 has already sold 120 million units world wide - with the price point, and the diversity of software titles available, many more millions of units will likely be sold until the unit meets its end of life in 2010.
While BetaNews states there is no word on this model coming to the United States and elsewhere, ITWire has a story that details the console being released in Europe and down under, then the United States. The exact dates of availability are not specified, having slipped from previous announcements.

Just another attempt to make money from the only console they have on the market currently, that is doing very well.
It is just like when they redid the Playstation, into the much smaller Playstation One. They did that to keep sales of that console up while releasing Playstation 2. This is no different, with PS 3 not doing as well as expected, its a last ditch effort to keep enough money coming in to meet over head while they await PS3 to make it big.
When they come out with a new console, do not be surprised if they repeat this same move once more.
The Playstation consoles, since birth, with the exception of the PSone, have been among the largest consoles in terms of size. Granted they can be used in the up and down position but its been proven that they tend to fail faster when used in such a way.
