AMD Sneaks Into The Top Ten

Last quarter, AMD did something it has never done since its inception. With sales of 1.6 billion dollars in the third quarter, the company has found its way into the top ten of chip manufacturers.
The fact that this is now occurring underscores the David and Goliath position, of AMD with respect to Intel. The Intel dollar figure at 9.2 billion dollars is almost 6 times that which was posted by AMD, and almost twice what the second place finisher, Samsung posted.
The fact that AMD is in the top ten also belies the fact that the company is bleeding red, having not turned a profit in several quarters. On the plus side, the company is getting closer to that magic black line.
Since the volume is up, it will be interesting how many more places the company will move up the list, as it struggles to profitability.

I dont know why AMD has not equated to Intel, one of the last computer’s I built used a AMD processor, and I found it to be on par with most my Intel platform’s. AMD is alive and well, and im sure it will surely rise and prevail, or atleast rub elbow’s with Intel soon enough.

AMD makes great processors, but for some reason they never have broken into corporate America in a really major way.
I know myself. I have lost sales when upgrade time came because a ‘corporate buffoon’ found out I had saved them about $500 dollars per seat using ASUS mbds with AMD procs, rather than Intel and Intel. Note that this was also during a time that AMD was clearly the performance champ (before Core2).

I love ASUS motherboards. There support is strong, and out of about thirty, maybe three will be faulty. Then its a simple matter of sending them in for replacements, no muss, no fuss. However I swing the way of Intel, they seem to handle multiple processes better then AMD, however for a dedicated system I swing with AMD. A good example, I built a machine that was to be used only as a online game server, nothing more. So I put in a AMD, his last machine was of similar specs but had a Intel chip. He told me he noticed a large improvement on that server with the AMD, why? It just handles a single task very well.

unclejohncentral, I am sure that the defect rate is much less than 10%, and I also think that the company delivers great product.
I have found the exact opposite to be true when comparing CPUs, as have many of my clients. AMD is much better at ’snappy feel’ when set up properly. Intel currently leads at raw speed, but AMD is still superior in many respects.
The fact that AMD competes is a phenomenon, as the disparate sizes would make anyone think it not possible.
