Ubuntu Developers Get Started On Hardy Heron

  • No Related Post

Currently the Ubuntu Developer Conference is discussing the way that the next release of Ubuntu, called Hardy Heron, is to go. Hardy Heron will be the next LTS release, which means it will be supported for 3 years, just as the 6.06 release was/is.

The developers have already stated that Hardy Heron will be evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. It will refine the features added in Gutsy Gibbon, such as the Compiz window manager. Many user refinements are planned to make the system more universally usable and even more easily modified to individual tastes. Specifically targeted are keyboard bindings and session management.

Also being considered for major improvement is PolicyKit, which is a developing method for secure privilege elevation. This is much like UAE in Vista, but with promises of much less annoyance. PolicyKit is being developed in conjunction with Red Hat and will be also used in Fedora 8.

Also up for revision is the Tracker, which will improve the search function system wide. The search function will possibly be integrated with a form of tagging, so that important files will be easily found through a quick jump.

The last item for change will be an update to the display, merging some of the Tango style icons with the more advanced GNOME features.

Ubuntu developers are convinced that another long term release will further encourage top-tier suppliers of hardware to include Ubuntu as a choice when customers purchase their hardware. This is getting to the stage where a real choice possible. Customers can purchase what fits their needs and style, and pocket. The Microsoft Tax is on the way out.
