the fix is in!

The Adobe Reader problem, brought to light by Petko Petkov (you can’t make this stuff up!) of GNUCitizen.org has been patched. Although the problem was found to be originating in the operating system and not the Adobe software, Adobe was moved to make changes for the sake of its software.

The problem was with Windows XP, and Internet Explorer 7. Amazingly, the problem was exacerbated by the forced update to IE7, as Internet Explorer 6, a supposedly less secure browser, was unaffected. One step forward, two steps back.

from BetaNews

BetaNews downloaded and tested Adobe’s 8.1.1 patch for Acrobat Professional, with a proof-of-concept URL that we had seen previously load the Windows Calculator as proof it could launch any code without security checks. Now the application instead pulls up a dialog box, which reads, “Acrobat does not allow connection to: mailto:test%../../../../../../../../windows/system32/calc.exe”.cmd”

Today’s updates work with version 8 of the reader software. In its advisory to users today, Adobe said a future update will be made available for version 7.

Simple, effective, and still no apology has come from Microsoft….hmmm.

I smell conspiracy here, just like what Microsoft did to Netscape - know the enemy’s weakness, exploit it and keep them so occupied trying to fix ‘their’ problems, that they don’t even realize you’ve just annihilated them.

Microsoft has made it known that they are targeting Adobe products as a new market for Microsoft to enter. This just looks like some the old Microsoft tricks to make their competition look bad.

barry, several states want further monitoring of Microsoft because of the release of Silverlight - they are afraid of another monopoly position. So you are probably right. Darth Ballmer is still at large.
