One of the great secrets in tech history has apparently been hidden for about 8 months. In January, a single journalist announced that a triple layer format was being approved by the DVD Forum, which is the governing body and backer of the HD DVD format.
The format, using 3 layers of information totaling 51 GB, was engineered by Toshiba, and was given approval in August. The company had working discs passed out in January at the Consumer Electronics Show, but later warned the discs might not be backwards compatible on all players.
Along with no word on which companies will adopt the format, there is also no official name for it.
Reports in the Los Angeles Times of cash offers to Warner Bros to move from being format neutral to HD are as yet unconfirmed. Another source states that the offers were made to both WB and Paramount - and Paramount accepted the cash.
This news has the supporters of each format all lathered up, ready to verbally fight the good fight.
What remains to be seen is how the compatibility will be implemented, and how durable the discs will be - with each bonding of layers there is more chance for defects and the dreaded laser-rot to creep in.
