Sony to Add PVR Capability to PS3 (in Europe)

Announced at Games Convention in Leipzig, PlayTV will be available in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain in the early part of 2008. Sony vows other countries using the PAL format will get the upgrade as time goes by.

The upgrade will include twin tuners (DVB-T) with 1080p capability, with all the expected Personal Video Recorder functionality, and of course, the ability to stream the content to a PSP for portable viewing.

Sony officials excitedly announced the complete ease of use that PlayTV offers, which makes it a natural for PS3 owners.

Sony vowed that other additions and software updates would flow freely via the Play Station Network.

Since the announcement in Europe, no news of this capability has come for the PS3 in any other markets.
