As Freespire 2.0 Is Released, Linspire CEO Carmony Resigns

Yesterday, the news that the second major release of the free operating system from Linspire, called Freespire is available now. This morning, the announcement that, as of July 31st, Kevin Carmony had resigned his position as CEO of the company.

Some accounts are speculating internal struggles after the ‘compromise agreement’ that Carmony spearheaded with Microsoft. There was much talk about selling the open source movement down the river, much as Novell had done. Carmony had almost immediately sent out one of his Linspire newsletter to assure the faithful that such was not the case, and that all the agreement did was make sure that more Linspire goodness was continuing as planned.

Most probably are not aware of the other items on the former CEO’s plate, as he is chairman of the board or chief executive at a couple of other interests, so he’ll be busy without any additional projects at Linspire.

Mr. Carmony is also stating he will be working on the election campaign of Mitt Romney during the ongoing election cycle. Perhaps some place in the government which can oversee computer concerns in the nation awaits?

Mr. Carmony joined Linspire in 2001, and saw during its tenure a great growth in popularity. His newsletters, available to anyone who signed up, were always informative and entertaining.

Michael Robertson, the founder of Linspire, once known as Lindows, has made no statements about the loss to the company thus far.

It will be interesting to watch how Linspire, and Freespire, will stay with, or diverge from, the course set upon by Mr. Carmony.
