nVidia Gains Market Share Again

Reported in Extreme Tech this week is the news that nVidia all but owns the graphics market in the desktop area.

It was probably clear to many that nVidia was the big boy on the block, but what was less clear is that AMD-owned ATi has done some serious slipping. The story is not news in the overall gist, but fairly enlightening in the specifics, as the also-rans, S3, SiS, and Matrox are much smaller than most would think.

In fact, one might be tempted to ask why these three bother, considering that not much innovative has come from any of these factories in years. Surely the idea was not to become a miniscule part of the market.

The data makes it easy to see that the fortunes of these companies can change on a dime, and that the possibility of ATi collapse just might happen. It was not really that long ago that S3 was a major player in the graphics market. The company was never a threat to dominate, but it had a healthy share.

Does anyone remember Tseng Labs, or 3dfx?

It is interesting to see that nVidia’s market share is increasing while its compatibility with the Windows Vista is questionable at best.

It could have something to do with the many Vista ‘upgrades’ to XP being performed by many shops. Then there is the fact that Dell is allowing the choice of XP, knowing full well that fewer probems are going to have to be solved that way.

Just this morning on Computerworld, Preston Gralla penned an article ‘Making XP Last for the Next 7 Years’. I really think that MS screwed the pooch with Vista, and they are doing nothing to make things better.
