New York Office Towers Using Ice-Box Cooling

Some forward, and backward, thinking companies in New York are using the traditional ice-box method to reduce, or eliminate, air conditioning during the high heat of summer.
Benefits are said to be lower pollution, higher efficiency, and lower overall costs for the same level of cooling.
The systems use ice, frozen at night, with air recirculated over the ice mass during the day.
Another benefit of the plan is that because the ice is frozen at night, the energy draw for freezing is at off-peak times, negating the need for higher output from the electricity provider during the waking hours.
