According to the good folks at Maximum PC, the beta of the first service pack might appear as soon as today!

According to a Reference Guide from Microsoft, the package will attempt to fix the following

• Corrupt Windows image fixes
• Better language support
• Setup and login fixes
• Help topic updates

The article states that there should also be enhancements to ReadyBoost, and a better desktop search [this must mean Google].

Of course, not wanting to trash your ailing machine further, it is probably a good idea to try the fixes in a virtual machine. [Virtual PC just may be the kindest gift from Microsoft in years]

Although the estimate of today is not a firm one, the SP1 download should be available much sooner than earlier predicted.
