Linux From Scratch

Over at Maximum PC, there is an article on building your knowledge, with the benefit that when you’ve completed the project, you will know much of the stuff that will keep you using it, instead of giving up and running back to Windows.

In order to use Linux From Scratch, you’ll need to have a designated machine. The idea here is to have a machine that you have chosen all the needed bits for, and made them work in the manner you wish.

When you’ve gotten the basics down, you’ll feel ready for the heavier stuff, and so are the people at Beyond Linux From Scratch

The whole thing is very time intensive, but if you commit to it, you will be rewarded with knowledge you can put to use to make your system behave exactly as you want, and not be tied to what Redmond wants you to have. You’ll have your very own distribution!

This is akin to building up a Windows 3.1 system, by installing DOS, getting familiar with the command line, and then putting the graphical interface on it. The power of this system, will eclipse anything Microsoft sells, including Vista.  If you do this, people will admire you, tell their friends about you, and ask your advice from now on!

Good luck, and go get it!
