AMD Invests in Transmeta

Friday, AMD announced it was investing 7.5 million dollars in the processor efficiency technology being worked on by Transmeta.
Its good to see this for a few reasons, not the least of which is that if AMD feels it has money to invest, things must be moving along better than some predicted. After the last disappointing news concerning the early quad-cores and the ATI releases, it is nice to hear something good from Sunnyvale.
The deal puts the two companies together as allies against Intel, as both are involved in suits against that company.
The next good news will be good for the Earth as well, as AMD/ATI are making great strides in energy efficiency. The latest midrange ATI video cards, although not quite as fast as their nVidia counterparts, don’t require external power connectors, as they can pull all needed power from the PCIe bus. That’s progress! Perhaps with the help of Transmeta, AMD will be able to pull off the small box computer talked about at the last CES.
