Windows Vista SP1 RTM: A first glance

Today Vista’s second coming as finally gone golden. Vista Service Pack 1.
I call it a second coming because I look at this as Microsoft’s chance to but that extra little bit of polish on the operating system.
I’ve only been using it for a few hours.. but I can already say that there is definitely improvement in a few key areas.
1. Performance.
- They really did tackle this problem. Vista’s general performance when performing basic computer operations is faster. Period. My system feels much more responsive now and applications launch faster. I’m really glad to see a performance boost… However.. instead of thanking MS. I’m going to yell at them. IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME. Now that I got that out of my system
2. Networking
- Service Pack 1 includes a hotfix that makes it so getting an IP address off of a wireless or wired network is now much faster. No more 5 minutes “identifying” my home network. It just works and is usually already connected and ready to go as soon as I log in. Again… bout time.
3. File Copy Performance
- I know they previously released a hotfix for this but personally I did not see much difference in performance. I copied some movie files after SP1 (about 2GB worth) and it showed a serious speed improvement and calculated the time remaining in only a matter of seconds. MUCH BETTER.
Overall thats all I can really say so far. I have not ran into any compatibility problems as all my apps are still running happily. I’m not going to go into the under the hood changes in SP1 as they are extensive and down right boring.
Many of you that are using Vista may have already gotten your hands on the RTM of this long awaited service pack but if you haven’t don’t be afraid of it BUT don’t expect a huge change in the overall experience. It is still very much the same Vista. However it now gives off a much more polished feel and absolutely shows some performances increases.
To get Service Pack 1 you must wait until March when MS officially releases it to the public. This does not mean the product is not done now because the version released today was given to PC manufactures to pre-install on new PC’s. Google is your friend however and there is a registry edit you can perform that will make the new service pack available today.
Maybe I will do a more complete review on the new service pack at a later date but honestly I don’t know if I’m interested. Windows Vista was a much better performer in RTM state after all the updates through January and is now even better in a few very positive ways.
In March you will see it in Windows Update, or jump in now. The waters nice and I as of now am impressed with Service Pack 1.
Anyone else have Vista SP1 yet? I’m looking forward to hearing from others about the subject. Feel free to leave a comment.

[...] you use this registry hack). Reports so far are mixed with some people claiming they have seen serious improvements in performance while others are a little less impressed (1, 2). Will the release of SP1 be enough [...]

To me the only thing it did was improve file copying on my home network.
