Gagging on Splog

Spam blogs, those which offer no original content (of their own making) yet flood their blog with Adsense and other get rich quick type of ads are known as splogs. I’m sure you’ve seen a few at least. Advertising has been around for years, on websites and all other forms of media. But, television, magazines, radio and so on, have paid for the content they use in order to draw readers/ viewers to the ads which bring them revenue. Splogs don’t pay anyone, sometimes they don’t even ask first. I’ve found my posts from this blog copied to splogs, they didn’t ask or let me know.
The worst thing is how splogs are making blogs and ezines look like garbage. Not only the ads versus content issue but the whole spirit of blogging which was free and fun and creative. It’s being drowned out in the flood of junk. Once upon a time personal sites were scoffed at for being tacky and useless. That feeling is being transferred to the monetized sites now, the splogs. But it leaks over to all blogs and is ruining what could have been a lot of creative freedom.
Some web directories are considering not listing sites which have a high spam versus content ratio, especially splogs which don’t offer anything original at all. I very much support this myself. There isn’t a hard and fast guideline for how much spam is too much. However, sites which make you scroll down to find content and sites which sandwich content between bars of spam (in my opinion) have gone too far. Hopefully this will change and splogs will go the way of the pop up window, soon I hope.
