The End of TV Commercials?

On CBC News there is a report about networks who want cable and satelite companies to pay a subscription for showing their content. Of course, consumers can be sure this will filter down and we will be paying, not the cable or satelite companies. I think this should mean we will no longer be plagued by commercials. Why should consumers pay for the cable gear, the network subscription and still be forced to watch unwanted ads that only add money to the pockets of the companies we are renting services from. It makes sense to me that television ads should be considered spam, they are all unwanted and unasked for.

If they want to be paid then we shouldn’t be spammed.

If they try and charge for carrying local syndicated channels then the cable monopolies can simply drop the locals.

The local networks are important too, maybe more here in Canada than in the US. I would pay to keep getting our local stations with the local news and Canadian content. But, I wouldn’t like to have spam still included.

What if you had to pay for Fox, TSN, ABC, NBC and so on. Would you want to have only local cable channels and nothing from the big guys?
