website issues

Well, as I have said before, this is my first month with my MacBook and I have had relatively no issues.  I have run into times when I will go to a certain website and it will not work because it requires Internet Explorer and that can be a real pain.  Internet Explorer on OS X is pretty much dead at this point and has been for about 5 years although, you can still download the last version.  I ran into this issue over the weekend trying to do an online class.  I use Firefox as my main browser and have been since my days on Windows but the site I was trying to go to required Internet Explorer and nothing else so I downloaded it only to find out that the other requirement to run this site is Windows itself.  How annoying!  Why would a website do this!  Well, I guess this is just the way it is.  Anyone have any thoughts on this issue?
