Smart Limits

Not long ago ATT Mobility (Formerly Cingular) came out with a service called “Smart Limits”. It is a service which allows you to limit all useage on a spacific mobile number. For example, if you have a teenager and wanted to limit his/her text messaging to 200 messages per month, once that number was reached the text messaging will automatically be disabled. Same for voice minutes, data useage and purchases.

Those of you who had this service have noticed it is no longer available. Here is the reason why…

It was found that when the minutes of use were reached and the phone was disabled it would cause an issue with emergency calls. Even if the limit is reached, emergency calls to 911 were allowed, however, in the unlikely event that the customer dropped the call after dialing 911, the operators were found to not be able to call the mobile phone back (because of the incoming call block). At first AT&T simply informed customers that had the service about this possibility and stopped further subscriptions, but in the end decided to remove the service altogether until a fix can be found.
